Polycarp Recognizes the Heretic Marcion as "the son of Satan."

Polycarp, bishop of the church of in Smyrna, at one time made a visit to Rome. Marcion, the leader of the Marcionites who followed a dualistic heresy, and Polycarp had known each other very well back East. When Polycarp happened to come across Marcion on the street, he was going to pass without speaking. Marcion confronted Polycarp and demanded respect by saying, "Recognize us, Polycarp." Polycarp responded, "I recognize you, yes, I recognize the son of Satan."
