*Angels* pt.2: Basic Angelology

Wait a minute. . . isn't the Angel Gabriel and The Angel Michael males?? .. am I missing something?   Gabriel and Michael are males correct?

+SmithsnMoz Incorrect. Male and female refer to material bodies. Further, male and female are necessary for procreation; that's the only reason we have genders. Angels don't procreate. Further, they aren't material. Thus angels can't have a gender.

Angels are depicted as male, and generally assume male bodies. However this is only because they are more like male than female in their nature.

Furthermore, Jesus, when asked about whether we would have marriage in heaven, He responds in the negative, saying we will be like the angels. This means that angels don't marry. This indicates that they can't procreate. Thus there can't be gender in angels.
On top of that, Aquinas teaches that each individual angel is his own species. Thus there can't be male and female in a species if there are only one instance of said species. Also, two different species can't procreate together.

One last thing, angels are more masculine than feminine with regard to their nature and office. That's why we refer to them with masculine pronouns.

Hope that helps. God bless.
