Blessed Feast of Our Lady of Częstochowa!
The icon of Our Lady of Częstochowa is a four-foot-high painting that shows the Virgin Mary as the ”Hodegetria” or ”One Who Shows the Way.” In it, the Blessed Virgin directs attention away from herself, gesturing with her right hand toward Jesus as the source of salvation.
Supposedly, St. Luke painted it on a cedar table top from the house of the Holy Family. The same legend holds that the painting was discovered in Jerusalem in 326 by St. Helena, who brought it back to Constantinople and presented it to her son, Constantine the Great.
The ”Black Madonna” is credited with miraculously saving the monastery of Jasna Gora, Poland from a Swedish invasion. Two scars on the her right cheek are result of desecration by Czech Protestants. King John II Casimir Vasa crowned Our Lady of Częstochowa as Queen and Protector of Poland in the cathedral of Lwiw on April 1, 1656.
Częstochowa is regarded as the most popular shrine in Poland, with many Catholics making a pilgrimage every year. A pilgrimage has left Warsaw every August 6 since 1711 for the nine-day, 140-mile trek. Elderly pilgrims recall hiking through the countryside at great risk during the Nazi occupation. St. John Paul II visited as a student pilgrim during World War II. (Source: ”Polish American Journal”)

Suzana Solis Dođi, Duše Presveti
Dođi, Duše Presveti,
sa neba nas posjeti
zrakom svoje milosti.
Dođi, Oče ubogih,
djelitelju dara svih,
dođi, srca svjetlosti.
Tješitelju tako blag,
ti nebeski goste drag,
pun miline, hlade tih.
Umornima odmore,
u vrućini lahore,
razgovore žalosnih.
Sjaju svjetla blaženog,
sjaj u srcu puka svog,
napuni nam dušu svu.
Bez božanstva tvojega
čovjek je bez ičega,
tone sav u crnom zlu.
Nečiste nas umivaj,
suha srca zalivaj,
vidaj rane ranjenim.
Mekšaj ćudi kamene,
zagrij grudi ledene,
ne daj nama putem zlim.
Svim što vjeru imaju,
što se u te ufaju,
sedam svojih dara daj.
Daj nam krepost zaslužnu
i smrt lijepu, blaženu,
daj vjekovit svima raj.
