Cofradia de San Juan Bautista
Today we celebrate the Feast of Our Lady of Mount Carmel. As a confraternity, this devotion is important to us, as we wear the brown scapular and promise to recite the Little Office (or the Divine Office) in fulfillment of its conditions. But aside from the Little Office, what does Mount Carmel have to do with our Confraternity?
Mount Carmel is the place where the Holy Prophet Elias confronted the priests of Baal and proved that the God of Israel is the True God. Therein lies the connection, for our Patron, Saint John the Baptist, is the one who was prophesied to go forth "in the spirit and power of Elias". To us, the scapular also serves as a reminder of the camel hair which our Patron wore in the desert, in his sojourning there in fasting and prayer.
We highly recommend being invested with Our Lady's Brown Scapular, and fulfilling the promises by means of her Little Office. Not only is it an excellent devotion, but it is Liturgy as well: when you pray the Little Office, you also pray with the Universal Church!
