Amen, The Passionists: St. Paul of the Cross Province

Lord our God, we thank you for the trust you have put into our hearts. We thank you for all the signs of your goodness that comfort us when we are in great need and when many deaths take place around us and touch each of us. We thank you for comforting us, for always giving us fresh courage wherever we may be, and for giving us hope for other people, who also struggle hard to find what is good. O Lord God, bless our world with power from on high, with your gifts that bring good to many people. Bless our world. Save it from sin, from ruin, from every kind of despair. Give your blessing, O Lord our God! As you bless us, so bless all the world, to the glory of your name. Amen.

Amen, REFLECTION FOR MONDAY, AUGUST 13, 2018

First Reading: Ezekiel 1:2-5, 24-28c

Gospel: Matthew 17:22-27

THE EXAMPLE OF ST. PONTIAN

In today’s Gospel, Jesus says to His disciples, “The Son of Man is to be handed over to men, and they will kill him, and He will be raised on the third day.” Jesus is speaking about Himself. His disciples were overwhelmed with grief. They had their own ideas about what the Messiah should be like and it certainly did not include suffering and death. Jesus; however, made it very clear (Luke 9:23-26) that if anyone wished to follow Him, they had to take up their cross daily and follow Him. Jesus addressed those words not only to the men and women of His day but to all of us – you and me today.

Today is the feast of St. Pontian. He was called to be Bishop of Rome on July 21, 230 AD. Severus Alexander, the Roman Emperor at the time, was tolerant of Christianity, and Pontian took up his duties in a relatively peaceful environment. This peace was soon shattered with the ascension of a new Emperor, Maximinus, who unleased a violent persecution against the Christians. Pontian was arrested and sent to forced labor in the mines of Sardinia, in effect, a death sentence. He had chosen to follow in the footsteps of Jesus, and now He was asked to take up his cross and to follow Him to Calvary and a brutal death. Pontian accepted his sentence, and in order to allow an orderly transition in the Church of Rome, he resigned on September 28, 235 AD, becoming the first Pope to do so.

You and I may not be called to be a martyr like St. Pontian, but all of us are called to follow in the footsteps of Jesus. There are Christians who adopt a prosperity gospel in which the emphasis is on the good things of life. The cross; however, is an integral part of Christianity. It is the sign of our salvation. There are millions of Christians throughout our world who are nailed to the cross of discrimination and open persecution for their faith. The possibility of physical death for the sake of Jesus is not theory for them; it is a daily fact of life. We are blessed in this country; but let’s not fool ourselves, there are forces at work to privatize our faith and silence the truth of the Gospel.

St. Pontian is not only a distant historical voice of faith and fidelity, but he is an example for us. He lived a peaceful life for many years, but when the chips were down, he accepted the cross and followed Jesus to Calvary. May we pray for the grace of fidelity in times of peace and in times of persecution.

Sotona mrzi svećenike, đavao i pakleni anđeli uživaju u svećeničkim padovima, a još više likuju kada narod Božji ne moli za njih i njihovim se slabostima ruga, te tako brani svoje vlastite slabosti i grijehe !

Uvodna molitva; ISUSE, VJEČNI VELIKI SVEĆENIČE

Sačuvaj svoje svećenike pod zaštitom Tvog presvetog Srca, gdje im nitko ne može naškoditi. Sačuvaj neokaljanim njihove posvećene ruke kojima svakodnevnice dodiruju Tvoje sveto Tijelo. Sačuvaj čistima usne koje porumene od Tvoje predragocjene Krvi. Očuvaj čistima i nezemaljskim njihovo, Srce što je opečaćeno uzvišenim zankom Tvog slavnog svećeništva. Daj im porasti u ljubavi i vjernosti prema Tebi i sačuvaj ih od okaljanost svijetom. Daruj im snagom pretvorbe nad kruhom i vinom i snagu pretvorbe srdaca. Blagoslovi njhov rad bogatim plodom i podari im jednom krunu vječnoga života. Amen! (Sv. Terezija od Djeteta Isusa)
