The first is the Holy Name of Jesus; the second, the Holy Name of Mary, and the third, the Brown Scapular of Mount Carmel. "Take off that habit," they cried to him, "which snatches so many souls from us. All those clothed in it die piously and escape us."

HOW A MAN WHO SOLD HIS SOUL TO THE DEVIL WAS SAVED BY THE BROWN SCAPULAR

A young man in Perugia once promised the devil that if he would help him to commit a sinful act which he desired to do, he would give him his soul; and he gave him a writing to that effect, signed with his blood. The evil deed was committed, and the devil demanded the performance of the promise.

He led the young man to a well, and threatened to take him body and soul to hell if he would not cast himself into it. The wretched youth, thinking that it would be impossible for him to escape from his enemy, climbed the well-side in order to cast himself into it, but terrified at the thought of death, he said to the devil that he had not the courage to throw himself in, and that, if he wished to see him dead, he himself should thrust him in. The young man wore about his neck the scapular of the sorrowing Mary; and the devil said to him: Take off that scapular, and I will thrust you in.

But the youth, seeing the protection which the divine mother still gave him through that scapular, refused to take it off, and after a great deal of altercation, the devil departed in confusion. The sinner repented, and grateful to his sorrowful mother, went to thank her, and presented a picture of this case, as an offering, at her altar in the new church of Santa Maria, in Perugia. The Scapular Protects a Young Lady from the Devil

The Cure of Ars, Saint John Vianney was well known for the gift of reading souls and shocked many through out his many years by telling people their Sins before they ever speak. Once a certain young lady was about to give her Confession to when before saying a word, Saint John Vianney said to her, “Remember a few days ago in the ballroom a good-looking young man who danced with all the girls but you? And you felt ashamed? And remember you saw sparks coming off his feet when he left? Know that it was the devil in human form, and the only reason he didn’t dance with you is because you were wearing the Scapular. Thank the Blessed Mother for that.”

Vid den tiden gick Jesus och hans lärjungar till Judeen,

och där stannade han en tid med dem och döpte.

Också Johannes döpte; det var i Ainon nära Salim,

där det var gott om vatten, och folk kom dit och blev döpta.

Johannes hade nämligen ännu inte satts i fängelse.

Ett par av Johannes lärjungar kom att diskutera reningsbruken med

några judar, och de gick till Johannes och sade:

»Rabbi, han som var tillsammans med dig på andra sidan

Jordan och som du vittnade om, han döper nu själv, och alla

kommer till honom.«

Johannes svarade: »Ingen får något som inte ges honom från himlen.

Ni kan själva vittna om att jag sade: ‘Jag är inte Messias utan har blivit

utsänd att gå framför honom.’ Brudgum är den som har bruden.

Brudgummens vän, som står och hör på honom,

gläder sig åt brudgummens röst.

Den glädjen har nu blivit min helt och fullt.

Han skall bli större och jag bli mindre.«

From the Gospel according to John

JN 3:22-30

Jesus and his disciples went into the region of Judea,

where he spent some time with them baptizing.

John was also baptizing in Aenon near Salim,

because there was an abundance of water there,

and people came to be baptized,

for John had not yet been imprisoned.

Now a dispute arose between the disciples of John and a Jew

about ceremonial washings.

So they came to John and said to him,

"Rabbi, the one who was with you across the Jordan,

to whom you testified,

here he is baptizing and everyone is coming to him."

John answered and said,

"No one can receive anything except what has been given from heaven.

You yourselves can testify that I said that I am not the Christ,

but that I was sent before him.

The one who has the bride is the bridegroom;

the best man, who stands and listens for him,

rejoices greatly at the bridegroom's voice.

So this joy of mine has been made complete.

He must increase; I must decrease."
